In January 2002, we began receiving email messages [link to below] from a fifteen-year-old Afghan boy living in a refugee camp in Quetta, Pakistan. The boy and his friends had found a four-year old magazine published by the National Wildlife Federation, called "Ranger Rick," that had an article on River of Words. The boys wanted to know if the contest was still being held. (It was, for the seventh year in a row.) After the email exchanges excerpted here, five boys entered the contest; two were honored as finalists in April at The Library of Congress, the contest's co-sponsor. . Read more ...
